Why I'm Running for School Board

FCPS is at a crossroads. In recent years, we’ve made real progress: stronger standardized test pass rates, safer schools, better supports for students with unique learning needs, and a historic collective bargaining agreement that recognizes and respects the hard work of our world-class teachers and staff.

But now, our schools face new challenges. Public education is under attack across the country. Funding is tight. And new technologies like AI are reshaping the world our students are growing up in. To meet this moment, we need leaders who are ready to think strategically, act collaboratively, and always put students first.

That starts with listening, to teachers, staff, and families, and working together to strengthen partnerships with local and state leaders so that our schools have the resources they need to thrive. It also means standing firm for the core values that define our community: academic excellence, inclusion, and opportunity. Every child, no matter who they are or where they come from, deserves a welcoming, high-quality public education that helps them reach their full potential.

One of our region’s greatest strengths has always been our public schools. They are our community’s competitive advantage and the reason so many families, including my own, chose to make Braddock their home. My wife and I moved here because of these schools. Now, I’m running for School Board to help protect what makes them great, and to make sure we’re preparing our kids for their future, not our past.

Tom's Plans

Invest in Teachers and Staff

As the son of an educator, I know not only how hard this job is, but how important it is. I will work closely with county and state partners to fully fund our CBA so we can attract and retain the best educators and staff.

I will continue working to ensure FCPS creates a positive, welcoming environment for teachers and staff, guaranteeing they have the training and resources to do their jobs.

Protecting Public Education

Public dollars belong in public schools. I will work relentlessly to increase funding and maximize our budget to ensure our funds are used effectively in the classroom for the benefit of all students.

AI-Proofing our Kids

We must “meet the moment” with AI, ensuring we prepare our kids for their future, reinforcing our commitment to our Portrait of a Graduate, and making certain new technologies help rather than hinder student learning and classroom instruction. I'll be thoughtful about AI use in our classrooms, and work to restrict data sharing with these companies.

Quality Programming for all our Kids

One of FCPS' biggest strengths is our ability to serve kids of all needs. As the parent of two kids receiving special services from FCPS, I will work to ensure our programs continue to meet the needs of all students.

Community Engagement

As a dad of two FCPS students and past PTA president, I know how to engage with communities and meet families where they're at--ensuring they stay informed throughout the year on issues that matter to them.

Ensuring Safe and Welcoming Schools

I've lost friends to gun violence, and I will support efforts to prevent gun violence, enhance campus security, and foster learning environments where every student feels respected, supported, and included. I will also work to ensure continued access to no-cost mental health services for high school students, and expand resources to support the well-being of staff and younger learners.
